COMMITTEE NEWS
The club is looking for a Team Manager for the upcoming summer season! If you are interested please check out our position description. We are more than happy to have more than one Team Manager so don't hesitate to put your hand up!
You may remember late last year we had some club conversations about getting better at providing our allocated club helpers at AV Shield and XCR competitions. We tried a number of ways to do this and after a few attempts at a number of systems, and receiving feedback from members via the volunteer survey, the committee settled on a new system to improve the way we manage our club helpers.
This system requires members to sign up to a club helper duty at the start of season, upon registration. This allows members to choose exactly when they volunteer and provides plenty of notice, and as a club, we now have a fairer distribution of club duties and greater participation and support from members and their families. It has also relieved the committee of the ongoing need to find volunteers on a weekly basis and at short notice, allowing us to focus on other things.
We have used this system during the XCR season and the results are promising. For the first time, our club had a helper allocated to every single volunteer shift for the entire winter season. That is a huge milestone for us, and as a club we should be very proud of that. Thank you to everyone who signed up and completed a club duty this winter, it has made a world of difference for the committee and to those who often filled roles at short notice.
A reminder for members: if can no longer attend on the day you selected, please swap with another club member.
We will continue to use this system over the summer track and field season, once AV make the club helper roster available to us, we will make it available for members to sign up.
Thank you again to everyone who signed up and helped out over the winter, much appreciated.
ON THE TRACK
Australian Cross Country Championships - Wollongong - Alyssa Bearzi
On the 26th of August, a group of athletes from Williamstown Athletics travelled to Wollongong, New South Wales to take part in the Australian Cross Country Championships held at the Kembla Joggers Club. The famous cross country course was reasonably flat and perfect for the sunny and windless conditions Wollongong had provided. Both Alfa Adem and Monique Goldsworthy ran in the Under 14. Over the fast 3km course Alfa placed 29th while Monique placed 32nd out of 54 athletes. The under 18 race consisted of 2 laps of the 2km course. Over the quick 4km course Alyssa placed 13th out of 56 runners. Overall, it was a good weekend away from the cold weather in Melbourne. Well done to all the athletes who participated.
School Sports Australia 2017 Cross Country Championships - Zoe Woods
I competed at the school sport Australia National Championships representing school Wesley College. I ran in the U18’s team and we were looking to qualify for the World Championships with my school.
The race course was in a beautiful area in Hobart, Tasmania, and it offered some amazing views. On race day, the weather was miserable and unfortunately I was also sick with the flu. Considering the circumstances, I ran well, placing 25th in the U18’s. Our school team was quick but unfortunately, we got pipped for the win by a team from NSW. The experience was valuable and I look forward to competing in new championships in the future.
